For October, we want to discuss one of the shortlisted titles for the Man Booker Prize. It’s a fresh – and refreshing – list of finalists this year:

  • Bring Up the Bodies, by Hilary Mantel
  • Narcopolis, by Jeet Thayil
  • Swimming Home, by Deborah Levy
  • The Garden of Evening Mists, by Tan Twan Eng
  • The Lighthouse, by Alison Moore
  • Umbrella, by Will Self

Now, Bring Up the Bodies is obviously disqualified, because we’ve already discussed it.

But that still leaves five novels for you to choose from.

You can read more about them here at the Man Booker website.

And the British media wasn’t slow to wade in. Here’s the Guardian‘s report, podcast discussion and readers’ comments.

Here are the Telegraph‘s reviews of the shortlist, plus their readers’ comments.

Meanwhile, the Mail has gone the extra distance and has a picture gallery of the female finalists showing off their new-look bikini bodies – although its snide comment about Deborah Levy’s choice of outfit was surely uncalled for.

Actually, that last bit was a lie. (The Mail would never say anything denigrating about women.)

Once you’ve made your selection – based on bikini bodies or otherwise – just leave your comment below.

You have until 10am on Friday, September 14.

I'd love to hear about The Lighthouse, by Alison Moore.

It sounds like a brilliant read. Plus, it's her debut—and it's worth looking into someone new.

The Garden of Evening Mists, by Tan Twan Eng

this sounds interesting, cross cultural story, not too 'clever' hopefully and different
