Its completely bonkers, of course, says Jonathan Harvey preemptively, down the phone from the UK. TheCoronation Streetwriter and esteemed British playwright is referring to theproject he undertook in the lead-up to tStreets50th anniversary. His mission: turn the longest-running television soap into a stage play starring five actors playing 50-odd very odd Coronation Streetcharacters. Half a century down to two hours. With an interval. Bonkers.Coronation Street on Stagemakes Tom StoppardsThe Fifteen Minute Hamletseem a doddle. Daunting is right, agrees Harvey. The show did well in the UK, despite the perils of messing with a national (global, if you count the colonies) institution thats as inexplicable, odd and almost as enduring as the Royal Family.
