On Saturday I chatted with Simon Morton, host of Radio New Zealand’s This Way Up show about the new player on the social networking scene – App.net.
The start-up launched in a blaze of glory last week promising to build a platform that would spawn numerous mini social networks based on the needs of users and would be advertising-free. The catch – users have to pay US$50 to sign up, developers US$100. Still, App.net, on the back of endorsements from Silicon Valley luminaries, has raised $800,000, well beyond the $500,000 its founders deemed necessary to make the venture viable.
But is it likely to take off, a minnow going up against free ad-supported networks Facebook and Google+? Is Simon, who has signed up with App.net, wasting his money?
