What was Auckland Art Gallery thinking when, mixing up the glitterati with the glitterarty, it shipped in a raft of 100 people famous for being well-known to glam up the opening of the Degas to Dalí exhibition? The punters paid $75 each for the privilege of attending. The “celebrities” got in free. It was explained that papering the house in this way would spread word of the show through social media and presumably enhance its appeal.  Just how the tweets and Facebook postings of folk whose views are generally no deeper than a puddle might make great artists seem greater is hard to say. ...
