Statistics, somebody once wrote, are used as a drunken man uses a lamp-post – more for support than illumination. More to the point, as somebody more cynically put it, statistics are one set of figures from which two people can draw different conclusions. Last month, Creative New Zealand released the findings of its latest survey into New Zealanders’ attitudes towards, and attendance and participation in, the arts. The results are no surprise.
