It is inevitable, perhaps, that some will perceive the Government’s latest overhaul of the social welfare system as “beneficiary bashing”. Under the first phase of the reforms, changes affecting young people and teen parents came into effect in August, and from October, sole parents will be expected to be looking for part-time work when their youngest child turns five. Those with children over the age of 14 will be expected to seek full-time jobs. Under the second phase, the Government is proposing that those who turns down any offer of “suitable employment” will have their benefit cancelled ...
