Trust the political parties. That’s the implicit message in the Electoral Commission’s failure to address public distrust of list-only MPs in the long-awaited MMP review. The commission has responded to the most obvious flaws in our electoral system, but its recommendations will result in only minimal change, at a time when the public appetite is whetted for decisive improvement. Voters will applaud the end of the “coat-tailing” wrinkle, which allowed lone MPs to bring in their party list vote’s worth of colleagues on the strength of a single electorate win.
