To suggest political parties try to stop seeing everything through an ideological lens is too much to ask, but public debate would be more edifying and useful if only that were the case. For example, imagine for a moment it was a Labour-led rather than a Nationalled Government that had created a policy to assist women on benefits to afford long-acting contraception. In that case, the policy would almost certainly be seen, at least by the Left, as a practical way to help some of the poorest women in society cope with a cost that, fairly or unfairly, is more likely to fall on them than on their male ...
