Whangarei man Millan Ruka has done his region a great service by the simple act of paddling up his local rivers and filming what he sees. The images he has captured – of cows grazing on unfenced riverbanks, and streams fouled by the run-off from overstocked farms – may do more to prompt action on freshwater management than the mountains of scientific data showing that intensive pastoral farming is suffocating our rivers.
