The Devil made me do it. Not the most original excuse for doing something naughty, but it’s endorsed by the Vatican. Recently, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the No 2 man to the Pope, declared the media-driven scandals over leaked documents and financial skulduggery in the Church were the work of the Devil. Until he came up with that rationale, I had thought it the work of the Pope’s butler, bickering cardinals and sticky-fingered Vatican moneymen. Satan as the culprit makes much more sense.
