One weekend recently I had a birthday. Nothing too terrifying – it didn’t end in a zero, but it was close enough to a traumatic age to encourage me to flee Auckland and seek refuge in the company of friends. We found a remote beach house to rent in a region otherwise well stocked with vineyards and some fine restaurants and decided to make it a fat weekend by including Friday as part of the celebrations.
