In Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Mount Doom – aka Orodruin – was chiefly played by Mount Ngauruhoe. But some scenes were reportedly filmed on the slopes of Ruapehu, too. So when news arrived of increased volcanic acitivity in the crater at Ruapehu, that was good enough for headlines such as “Mount Doom is about to go boom”, and “Hobbits told to stay away”.
