Labour leader race: the opera

The scrapping around the Labour leader over the last year or so has regularly been described as a pantomime, but the latest developments are now captured in a loftier theatrical genre: opera.

The chest-beating announcement of candidacy in the contest for the next Labour leader by David Cunliffe has been set to music, sung by Andrew Grenon and accompanied by Robbie Ellis.

That came as a request following the pair’s first performance, the David Shearer resignation:

Now they’ve begun, it would be rude not to chronicle the entire race in operatic form. Please.

 

* He’s actually a tenor, but that doesn’t alliterate as neatly.
