If the award-winning “100% Middle-earth” campaign doesn’t squeal your wheels, you might like to revisit some of the NZ tourism promotions from years gone by, collected at the travel website Jaunted.

It introduces them this way:

Before Air New Zealand went super creative with their marketing, most of their ads were all about showing the pristine beauty of the virtually untouched nature and its native Maori heritage. Keeping true to the South Pacific location, while offering passengers lamb for dinner and sheepskin covered first class seats.

Among the site’s pick of “Five Awesome Retro Travel Ads for New Zealand” is one which makes an awkward pitch for visitors about the country’s composition.

“To see the world … see fabulous New Zealand,” it urges.

And: “These New Zealand Maoris are practicing their ageless art of carving. Ninety percent of New Zealand’s two and a quarter million population is of English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh descent. About six percent are Maoris.”

Says Jaunted: “We can’t imagine that would make the final cut today.”
