When a news site presents its content for mobile devices, layout is simplified, pictures are made smaller, and very often headlines are shortened.

In many cases that is an automated process, and it can make for some inadvertently amusing headlines, that cut off midflow, creating a very different meaning to that intended.

You occassionally see examples floating around on social media – let me know if there are any you can recall (I can remember, for instance, one from around World Cup time last year on the NZ Herald‘s mobile site, but can’t dig it up).

But a Londoner by the name of Nick Gill is generously compiling the best of the genre from the Guardian’s iPhone app and throwing them on a Tumblr site, guardiantruncationteam.tumblr.com.
