Video: Auckland’s new “no passport required” tourism ad

It’s all meant with a sense of humour, and so on, but it seems to me that Auckland’s new “no passport required” commercial will chiefly succeed in reinforcing perceptions in other parts of the country that the big city is a bit shallow and feeble – a bit, as someone once put it, “Sydney for beginners”.

I can’t see the people of Wellington flocking up.

Surely a better bet would be to reel off the cultural, sporting, dining and drinking breadth in the city. And – subtly, subtly – emphasising that it’s a place where, for much of the year, you can routinely sit outside.
