They did mean to go to sea – nine artists (Gregory O’Brien, Phil Dadson, Bruce Foster, Jason O’Hara, John Pule, John Reynolds, Elizabeth Thomson, Robin White and Fiona Hall) aboard the near-windowless HMNZS Otago on a trip to the remote Kermadec Islands.
