These are tough times for all the arts. Be grateful for the $275 million you’re still getting is the message from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. But of that $275 million, itself considerably less than half a per cent of total Government spending, only $20.5 million is earmarked for “performing arts services”. From that, the orchestral sector gets only $16.9 million, and of that $13.4 million goes direct from the ministry to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
