The premiere of Kaha, a showing of new and reworked projects by Atamira Dance Company, was a homecoming for artistic director Moss Patterson. Raised in Tokaanu, a tiny settlement at the southern end of Lake Taupo, he returned with Atamira for the Erupt Lake Taupo Festival. Connection to rohe and whakapapa are defining elements in many of the works, giving authenticity and intensity to the performances. Three pieces by Patterson are anchored in tradition. The opening work, his ancestral haka, is a commanding invocation to Tuwharetoa people, choreographed to add a fluid, polished dimension. ...
