A lone male figure stood atop a grand piano and scrutinised audience members as they took their places – his sense of quiet observation and isolation reminiscent of a statue soldier on a cenotaph. A large rectangular screen on the concrete stage floor carried disorienting images of super-magnified veins of leaves that moved across it at a dizzying pace. The dancer, Paul Young, now prone, crawled across the floor as the images flew over his body.
