There are almost as many documentaries as dramas in this year’s programme, possibly something of a record. Easy access to digital technology is one reason, but improved storytelling has expanded the market, too. Diverse topics, imaginative treatments and crisp shooting have dispelled old notions of docos as boring and worthy. So they turn up all over the show, not just in the Framing Reality section. Aotearoa New  Zealand boasts 10, including Pietra Bretkelly’s feature-length version of MAORI BOY GENIUS, about a 16-year-old studying political science ...
