Apotheosis, the first subscription concert in this year’s New Zealand Symphony Orchestra season, was well named, featuring as it did Beethoven’s heaven-storming last piano concerto and Mahler’s symphony that follows a child’s progress towards heaven. An overture with a difference opened the programme: Lilburn’s Processional Fanfare, now used for Victoria University’s graduation ceremonies.
