Last week’s announcement of major editorial cutbacks at the Melbourne base of Lonely Planet publications was widely seen as a sign that the famous budget travel guide might have caught its final tuktuk.

The company issued a series of denials about the impact of the changes, but it did nothing to staunch an outpouring of funereal nostalgia on Twitter, with fans of the books – and some of their authors – recalling important Lonely Planet inspired moments, using the hashtag #lpmemories.
