The night of the long tweets

For the neutral observer, it was terrific Twitter tennis.

Backing up a seed planted by rightwing blogger Whaleoil, RadioLive host and former 3 News political editor Duncan Garner tweeted at 9.05pm:

Good source. Coup on in Labour. Letter of no confidence being circulated. It’s over for Shearer. Watch for his resignation.

That sparked a frenzy of tweet-activity about the likelihood of what has come to be called the “spull” (our version of the Australians’ spill, obviously), with furious little missives firing through the night between journalists, Labour MPs and spectators.

The letter of no-confidence in David Shearer, sparked by the “man ban” kerfuffle – and according to speculation being circulated by Andrew Little, Clayton Cosgrove and Shane Jones – definitely did or definitely didn’t exist.
