Hark, is that Christmas I see there up ahead? I do believe it is. And so it is time to break out the Christmas music, with tracks from the second Christmas album by Sufjan Stevens and the first by Tracey Thorn. You’ll have to wait until the end of the Fish Fry for those, though. Plenty to enjoy first, including newly-announced-for-Laneway Polica, plus Vinyl Williams, Eraas, Clinic, Sinkane, LV, Metz, Egyptian Hip Hop … Names that mean not a thing to you? Well, you know how you can rectify that. Also: a couple of ineffable oldies from The The and The Trumpton Riots from a band that would bring a smile to even the grumpiest git’s face, Half Man Half Biscuit. That grumpiest git being me, of course.

Before all that, however, this week’s visual stimulant: a mid-period gem from Squeeze to mark the change of seasons …

Next week, a 50-track Albums of the Year Fish Fry special, with Nick Bollinger and Jim Pinckney’s pick of the best 20 (which will be in next week’s magazine) and (for what they’re worth) a bunch of my own choices on top.
