The Hobbit

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY
Unexpectedly awful. Fine acting, good production values, but tonally askew and the story is a mess. The one great scene (Bilbo meets Gollum) is a long time arriving.

SIGHTSEERS
Pitch-black British comedy-horror about passive-aggressive caravaners on a killing spree. Not for the sensitive.

QUARTET
Dustin Hoffman directs Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly and Tom Courtenay in a genial but formulaic tale of love and music, set in a palatial retirement home for classical musicians.

TO ROME WITH LOVE
Woody Allen never went away, but even so, he’s back. This companion piece to Midnight in Paris feels tossed off, mostly in a good way. Not much substance, but good fun.

WELCOME ABOARD
Lugubrious French drama about an old man rescued from late-life ennui by a chance encounter with a runaway teen. Slow, dull, self-important.
