Gangster Squad

Gangster Squad

Ultra-violent and badly in need of a sense of irony, but the cast of this old-school crime drama is full of A-listers. Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling, especially, are worth turning up for. 3.5/5

Such a smart action-adventure film that I went out and bought one of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels to see if it was as much fun. (Nope.) Tom Cruise is disciplined and charismatic in the title role. 4/5

The likeable animated tale of a weird, lonely boy whose fascination with zombies becomes unexpectedly relevant to his town’s chances of survival. 3.5/5

Chilly, difficult, magnificent. Joaquin Phoenix is astonishing as a traumatised World War II vet, and his relationship with Philip Seymour Hoffman’s cult leader is one of the great cinematic puzzles of 2013. 4.5/5
