1 The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s recent concert performance of Wagner’s The Valkyrie would have been nothing new for Aucklanders, long used to the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Opera in Concert series. The scale and length – over five hours – may have given them pause, but otherwise it was merely an hors d’oeuvre before Verdi’s NABUCCO. (Or perhaps Nabucco is the petit four following The Valkyrie.
