Our Parliament, even on a good day, is a peculiar and arcane institution. Since we inherited it from Britain, complete with ceremonial conventions designed around the days when an ill-tempered King could behead MPs at will, we’ve seldom seriously questioned its design and function. We’ve just celebrated its companion legacy, the monarchy, with a range of misgivings about the anachronistic nature of royalty. But at least the royals occasionally provide us with sumptuous television pageantry, and since the arrival of the Duchess of Cambridge, the quality of frocks has improved out of sight.
