American surrealist comedian Mitch Hedberg once denied he was a blackjack addict. “I’m just addicted to sitting in a semi-circle.” The National Party, holding its annual conference at gambling mecca Sky City this weekend, may make similar protestations. But party delegates may be wondering why their senior MPs are gambling on so many fronts. To paraphrase Hedberg, is the Government addicted to pokie machines – or just to frantically pulling levers in the hope that someday some money might eventuate?
