Other fields of endeavour may wind down for the silly season and gently ease their way into the new year but sport, like rust, never sleeps. In this part of the world, cricket took top billing thanks to the Ashes series and the antics of Shane Warne, who seems intent on supplanting Barry Humphries' great creation Sir Les Patterson as the definitive Aussie ratbag. Comedian Billy Birmingham, aka the Twelfth Man, must take a dim view of Warne's larrikin presence in the Channel 9 commentary box. If Warne continues to be given his head, it won't be long before Birmingham's spoof commentaries ...
