It was shrewd of All Blacks coach Steve Hansen to launch his era by choosing a 35-man training squad for next month’s three-test series against Ireland. First, it’s just a training squad. There are three more rounds of Super 15 before the actual All Blacks squad is named, a three week breathing space during which the media and public can come around to Hansen’s way of thinking, players seen as lucky to make the cut can justify the selectors’ faith and the selectors themselves can have second thoughts.
