When Christchurch City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt sparked a ratepayer revolt over his $68,000 pay hike early this year, he said all he wanted was the fair market rate. “All I’ve ever said to my council is, ‘You tell me what the market is, and I’m happy to be in that range, whatever it is,’” he told TV3.
