KIMBRA CONFIDENCE: Hamilton pop star Kimbra won nearly all the Tui Awards in 2012, and now she’s won a Grammy for singing on Gotye’s chart-topper Somebody That I Used to Know. We all have to start somewhere, and in 2001, she made a series of videos for What Now? in which she wrote and recorded a pop song. NZ On Screen has an excerpt, which shows that even at 11 she had charm and confidence to burn.

THE WEB OF ART: For 10 years, the New Zealand Art Show has been a place to pick up mighty fine local art at reasonable prices, and its website is a good place to start. Artists can display their work, buyers can enquire and tickets can be bought at artshow.co.nz.

TANKING: Younger members of the household may have been watching the rebooted Beauty and the Beast (Prime, Friday, 9.30pm) starring New Zealander Jay Ryan. Beauty and the Beast’s network, the CW, is known for its teen fare and hunky bods, and vulture.com has some fun with The Many Dude Tank Tops of the CW. Appropriately, Jay’s tank top is black.

ACADEMY GUY: It’s Hollywood’s chance to celebrate the movies this week, and Oscar host Seth McFarlane appears in a series of promos for the 85th Academy Awards. There’s James Bond; Psycho; and The Matrix.

PHOTO FINISH: The Listener’s Photo Essay Competition has finished its second successful year, and selected entries can be viewed on our website before the winner is announced in next week’s issue. The gallery is here. Click on “View photo essay in full size” to see the photos in their full glory.

HARD LANDINGS: Thought landing at Wellington Airport was frightening? The Guardian has compiled pictures of 13 airports that are way scarier. We especially like Funchal airport, Madeira, where the runway is partly on columns jutting out into the sea.
