Nelson Mandela: Free at last

Nelson Mandela's release from prison in 1990 threw him back into the turmoil of South African politics. As far-right white groups staged protests, he set about achieving majority rule. The Listener originally published this article in March, 1990.

A Lazarus species is one that is presumed to be extinct and then reappears. One example is the takahē; thought to have died out by 1898, it was rediscovered in 1948 by Dr. Geoffrey Orbell.
