Girl With a Pearl Earring (TV1, 10.30pm). Scarlett Johansson has grown up (see The Horse Whisperer), and leads a film about a 17th-century painting by a Dutch grand master. Mostly documentarian Peter Webber adapts from Tracy Chevalier’s best-seller, in which Griet (Johansson) comes to work as a maid in the household of Johannes Vermeer (played by Colin Firth). Slowly the teenage help upgrades her career to muse. Fittingly, for a film about beautiful yet static images, the use of colour and light makes this flick as pretty as a picture. (2003) 8
WEDNESDAY JUNE 4
Miss Potter (Sky Movies, 8.30pm). Beatrix Potter (author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit) gets an extreme makeover. Renée Zellweger, all apple-cheeks, plays the author and Ewan McGregor (whose career spans both the eye-popping Trainspotting and the turgid Star Wars prequels) is her publisher. The non-fiction Potter is a fascinating figure: a botanical illustrator of great skill, she also bought several farms to keep them out of the hands of developers. Potter here is more concerned with the frustrations of romance: McGregor is a tradesman, and her father warned her about those sorts. (2006) 5
FRIDAY JUNE 6
Sliding Doors (TV3, 11.15pm). Gwyneth Paltrow stars here in two mini-films: one as a brunette, the other as a blonde. Two parallel plot lines are developed when blonde Paltrow finds her lover in bed with someone else, while the dark-haired version remains ignorant. But is it bliss? (1998) 5
