Last week I walked in the chilly coastal mist through Rocklands, Chris Tiddy’s well-tended market garden on the outskirts of Oamaru. Row upon row of metre-high plants marched soldier-like beside me in the rich dark volcanic soil. They were sturdy stems of brussels sprouts, ready for their first harvest after six months in the ground. Brussels sprouts are one of Rocklands’ two vegetable crops, grown for supply to supermarkets and specialist vegetable purveyors in both islands. The other crop is the famous Oamaru gourmet potato.
