My mother cooked dinner for me last weekend. She has done that thousands of times, but this was very special. She’s recovering from a lengthy period of hospitalisation and recuperation that has meant we’ve taken her lots of food. I’m sure it took her almost all day to prepare my birthday roast-pork dinner, complete with fresh apple sauce and gravy, and a fragrant guava pie for dessert.
