Japanese cuisine has been embraced by New Zealanders in the past decade or two. Supermarkets are now well stocked with Japanese ingredients, and sushi has become the No 1 lunch choice in cities. In Wellington recently, I was intrigued to see a long queue of young people form at 5pm in a lane leading off Lambton Quay. Sushi for dinner? You bet.
