With the onset of really cold weather, it’s heartening to have a large saucepan of soup simmering away, filling the house with inviting aromas. Ham bones, lamb shanks and chicken frames, which take up room in the freezer, are ideal for flavouring and can be used for soup if you haven’t got stock on hand. Soup makes lovely weekend food, and with any luck there will be some left over for a quick pick-me-up during chilly weekdays.
