Tom Brown recalls sitting in the car waiting for his wife, Fay, to come out of the supermarket, when he saw a man emerge on a mobility scooter, zip down a rank, swiftly navigate a 90-degree corner and drive off with his groceries on the back. The sight prompted Brown, whose spinal condition stops him walking more than 20 paces, to get such a vehicle. He couldn’t afford a new one, and didn’t want to buy off Trade Me, so he contacted the Orewa branch of Age Concern, which actively promotes mobility scooters and sometimes sells second-hand models.
