    The tapes according to Peters:

Key says National could govern alone – True, according to both TV polls released tonight.

ACT needs a new leader – I couldn’t possibly comment.

Brash is a strange fellow – True, and I say viva la difference. Since when did eccentric = strange.

Winnie’s supporters are “dying off” – True. Rob’s Mob eventually has to pass on to the other side one day. Every generation has to face up to this fact.

So, not a false statement anywhere. Are NZer’s becoming afraid of facing the truth.

Conclusion – a media storm in a teacup.

“Labour leader Phil Goff said the investigation was an attempt to gag reporters.”…. (this from your hyperlink to the Stuff website.)

This is a pretty extreme statement to make. Silly really.

Either the Fairfax staff have misquoted Phil, or Goff’s judgment is starting to become as bad as Key’s; for example, Key’s bringing the subject of suicide into an election debate.

Perhaps both leaders are starting to drop the occasional ball given this week’s hectic pace of campaigning and over a week still to run. Who would be a politician even with an extra $7k p.a. pay rise? The best MP’s definitely earn their money.

Re the polls – no mention what the margin of error is for either poll but clear winners appear to be the Nats at 50%+ and holding and the Greens at 13%.

I assume both polls were taken before last night’s minor parties debate so the Greens can only improve further.

Plus, respondents obviously see the leader post election as a no-brainer. Who could disagree? Armstrong maybe.

“I one hundred per cent endorse what Chris Trotter has said.” Key, says Armstrong.

Why aren’t I surprised by this comment.

Not only does Armstrong censor/suppress most anti-Labour comments on his NZ Herald opinion page thus forgoing any Herald claim of a right to democratic freedom of speech for his daily diatribe, but he is so far left leaning he is in danger of falling out of his high chair.

At least Chris Trotter is prepared to enter into intelligent debate, god bless him. That I can respect.

Key is increasingly looking like he has something to hide. His over-the-top reaction by labelling the taping as like the News of the World, calling the police and even managing to bring in a child’s potential suicide into the conversation makes him a well-deserved target for the media.

I thought Bryan Gould on Morning Report yesterday was interesting: either way, now, Key fails.
    * If the details of the conversation are not released, it looks like he has something to hide
    * if they do get released, he looks like he has failed to manage the situation.

but what amazes me is that the details of the conversation hasn’t made it onto Crikey or another Australian blog, where our rules don’t apply.

This seems pertinent, from Gordon Campbell’s column at Scoop:

    >Not for the first time when the going gets tough, Key has got going – and is now refusing to take questions on the tape, citing the desire of New Zealanders to talk instead about “the important things that matter” in this election. You know, like trade and the economy.

    >Wow. Those important things being exactly what Key has systematically avoided discussing in prime time for the last three years, as he has relentlessly pursued every soft focus Breakfast TV interview and women’s magazine cover opportunity on the block – while at the same time, routinely refusing multiple invitations from the likes of RNZ’s Morning Report to discuss the serious issues he now claims to prefer to discuss.

Would a lip-reading of the tea-table chat be considered a breach of privacy?
Rodney Hide’s excesses now seem like he was at a children’s tea party compared to this stuff – has anyone seen him lately?

“Journalism doesn’t cause suicide, governments do.”

I know suicide is a sensitive subject, and I agree Key’s example was a very bad choice even though it was quite a valid privacy point he was attempting to make.

But to claim that governments’ cause suicide is beyond the pale. Suicide is a complex subject best left outside the heat of an election debate. Morning Report should have shown more sense – perhaps it was because Geoff was absent!

Bring back Geoff and quickly. I must away to work myself.

“The day’s most important moment could be just after 6pm, when One News gives us the results of its latest Colmar Brunton poll.”

    I agree.

I note I haven’t seen comment in your blog on yesterday’s NZ Herald on-line poll where 56% of respondents replied supporting Key’s media stance.

Dependent on the date it was taken, it will be interesting to see if this new CB poll reflects an actual increase in Nats support. It will also show whether the Greens have been impacted in any manner by their billboard saga.

The poor old media continues to rave on about the tape like it is the only show in town.

Don’t you realize you are being played for fools by the Nat spin doctors people. The Nats know there is nothing worthwhile on these illegally obtained tapes. They know they are safe.

Its become an obsession for you. Your thinking is stuck in the same ol’ rut that “there must be something to hide”, when in fact there is nothing to hide. And when it all finally comes out, who ends up with egg on their face but the NZ media. No wonder Key is smiling.

I still can’t find any hard media interviews with the freelance photographer who did the illegal taping; or any journalist inquiries to the police about where they are with their investigation and expected timeline to resolve this complaint.

Let’s hope today brings some fresh media lines of inquiry so we can all move on from this irrelevant issue.
