Looking at it now, many weeks after composing and submitting it, this seems a particularly tricky puzzle. Some nice clues, if I may say so, but I suspect some are complete stinkers on the difficulty front. Maintaining a consistent level of difficulty is one of my constant concerns and this one strikes me as stretching the limits. I do hope no-one cast it aside, never to pick up a cryptic crossword again. Having written some 18,000 clues for the Listener, I have lost any capacity to remember them.
